New Electrolyzer Operational
Hydrogen from Renewable Electricity for Production Processes
Breitenwang/Reutte, June 02, 2026 – At its Reutte site, the Plansee Group reached a significant milestone in its sustainability program: the new electrolyzer for producing hydrogen was successfully commissioned. The project was implemented in collaboration with Linde, the owner and operator of the electrolyzer plant. The hydrogen is produced using electricity from renewable energy sources – meaning no fossil fuels are used.
Hydrogen is an essential operating resource for the Plansee Group in the production of its molybdenum and tungsten products, for which the company is internationally renowned. Among other things, it is used to protect metals from oxygen during processing and to enable specific chemical conversion processes. Until now, the hydrogen required for this was produced using natural gas. With the new electrolyzer, the Plansee Group is gradually switching hydrogen production at its Reutte site to electricity from renewable energy sources. This eliminates the CO₂ emissions that would result from the use of natural gas.
With the electrolyzer, the transition could result in savings of up to 4,000 tons of CO₂ each year – a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability program. In addition, a heat recovery system has been installed to utilize the waste heat generated.
The hydrogen produced is used in many areas of production: in powder production, sintering, component machining, and final annealing. Nearly half of the hydrogen is required solely for the conversion of molybdenum oxide into pure molybdenum powder. In addition to the Plansee HPM business area, CERATIZIT at the Reutte site also uses a portion of the hydrogen produced.
The commissioning of the electrolyzer complements the Plansee Group’s existing measures to ensure a more sustainable energy supply for its industrial production processes at its headquarters in Reutte.
This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund and is being carried out as part of the “Transformation of the Economy” program. More at: www.klimafonds.gv.at.

About the Plansee Group: Focus on Molybdenum and Tungsten
With its products, the Plansee Group enables applications at the cutting edge of what is technically and physically feasible – in electronics, medical technology, energy supply, mechanical engineering, the construction industry, mobility, and security and defense.
Headquartered in Reutte, Tyrol, the group specializes in the powder metallurgical processing of the high-performance materials molybdenum and tungsten. The value chain extends from the processing of scrap and ore concentrates through the manufacture of intermediate products and blanks to the development and production of customer-specific components and tools.
The Plansee Group, with its parent company Plansee Holding AG, unites two strong business areas:
· Plansee High-Performance Materials, specializing in metallic products made of molybdenum and tungsten.
· Ceratizit, focused on tools made of hard metal (tungsten carbide) for the trades, machining, and industrial manufacturing.
The Plansee Group ensures long-term security of supply for its key materials through recycling and long-term partnerships with mining operators. The Plansee Group holds a 31 percent stake in the Chilean molybdenum processor Molymet and a 10 percent stake in the tungsten mining operator Almonty.
With 11,120 employees at 36 production sites, the Plansee Group generated consolidated revenue of 2.35 billion euros in fiscal year 2025/26. The fiscal year ends on the last day of February.
