Milestone achieved in the sustainability program of the Plansee Group
Greenhouse gas emissions compensated since March 2025
Over the past three years, Plansee and CERATIZIT have taken decisive steps towards reducing their greenhouse gas emissions through a wide variety of measures. "We have already been able to cut our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20 percent compared to our reference year of 2020," explains Dr. Andreas Lackner, Executive Board member of the Plansee Group.
Unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions generated by the company's own commercial operations (Scope 1 and 2), which are predicted to total 78 kilotons of CO2e for the current accounting period 2025/26, have been voluntarily compensated for through certified projects in the USA and India since March 1, 2025.
Own efforts lead to reduced carbon emissions
Among the measures already taken to reduce emissions is the procurement of electricity from renewable sources at all major Plansee and CERATIZIT facilities around the world as well as increasing our material recycling rates, of which tungsten constitutes 90 percent. Further initiatives are aimed at reducing energy use in our factories, installing electrolyzers for hydrogen production, upping the use of process heat, and recycling hydrogen. "We also have ambitious plans for the coming years. We want to continue downsizing our carbon footprint through our own initiatives so we can reduce the impact our production has on the environment step by step," Lackner says. Plansee and CERATIZIT will also be placing greater responsibility on their suppliers. "Around 70 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions are linked to purchased products and services – so we'll be working hard with our suppliers to identify solutions for avoiding and reducing these emissions."
High requirements for compensation certificates
The Plansee Group places strict requirements on the quality of the certificates it uses to compensate those greenhouse gas emissions that have been unavoidable so far (Scope 1 and 2). As a global manufacturing company, the Plansee Group is working to realize compensation projects close to its larger production sites. These include a forest conservation project in Pennsylvania in the US, situated in proximity to the Group's largest US production site in Towanda. The second project is near the Mysore and Bangalore production sites in India, where the production of solar power is being supported. Both projects are planned for the long-term and are being monitored by internationally recognized certification bodies (ACR and Verra) based on the highest standards available at present (ICVCM), in addition to conducting internal audits. In Europe, the Plansee Group is in the process of selecting suitable compensation projects.
Long-term plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Each business area of the Plansee Group is pursuing its own goals to successively reduce its carbon footprint. Plansee has set itself the voluntary goal of reducing its Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent before the year 2050 (compared to the reference year). CERATIZIT has committed itself to achieving this goal by 2040.
